Organized by B’naï B’rith – Michel de Montaigne, as part of the inauguration of the Organ of the Great Synagogue of Bordeaux, December 10, 2023, at 3 p.m.
Although the organ is traditionally associated with Christian liturgical music, its use was approved in the 19th century by the Conference of French Chief Rabbis.
This decision was debated between Orthodox and Reform Jews, yet music was already present in the Jerusalem temple, where over a hundred musicians played a variety of string and wind instruments…
Over the centuries, the role of synagogal music has evolved under the impetus of cantors, according to the place of Jews in the city and the spread of secular philosophical ideas, from Baghdad to Venice, from Western to Eastern Europe…
On the occasion of the inauguration of the synagogue organ, Hervé Roten, ethnomusicologist and Doctor of Musicology from Paris IV Sorbonne University, will talk about the debate that preceded the introduction of the pipe organ, notably in Paris, Bordeaux and Mulhouse.
His talk will help us understand the evolution of its role in liturgy.
