Sfarad – Lalla Soulika’s dreams

Sfarad – the dreams of Lalla Soulika brings back the soul of Sol Hatchuel, also called Lalla Soulika or Sol la Tsadika, beautiful Jewish girl from Tangier in the XIXth century who was condemned to death penalty when she was 17 years old for refusing to recant her religion. From the prison cell where the Cadi locked her, the night before her decapitation, the young girl dreams of how could have been her life, imagines the wedding she could have had, remembers her family and religious life, thinks of the lands in diaspora, hears the melodies born in these lands…
This performance blends dancing, singing, music and videos to give life to the heroin’s thoughts and to her native Morocco, through popular music that celebrates every step of life, birth, childhood, wedding, death.
Sfarad – the dreams of Lalla Soulika is the first dancing performance of Judeo-Spanish melodies. The Judeo-Spanish songs never made subject of a ballet. Its choregraphic language is built on figures of Oriental dances, present in all countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The stylised gestual brings back to the melodies the sensual beauty and simplicity.
