Klezmer and Yiddish music quartet
RELEASE OF THE 9th CD FROM THE “DISCOVERY” COLLECTION
The Bubbey Mayse* is the power of four women.
It’s a committed music, an assertive writing style, driven by the strength of the collective.
In their instruments, we hear the cries of stirring stories, feel the tread of anger, guess the deep roots with longings for horizon, dream of snuggling up in a dance until the wee hours…
And in their four finely tuned voices, we plunge into a whole, epidermal universe. This is the world of four women who come together around their love of klezmer music and the Yiddish language, and who draw from it the impetus to reinvent a brighter tomorrow.

* The Bubbey Mayse is an all-female quartet performing klezmer music and Yiddish songs. “Di bobe maises” means “Grandmothers’ Tales” in Yiddish, or alternatively “Tall Stories”.
The quartet was formed in Brittany in 2012 and consists of: Elsa Signorile (clarinet, vocals), Juliette Divry (cello, vocals), Margaux Liénard (fiddle, vocals) and Morgane Labbe (accordion, vocals).
Inspired by the solid foundation of the clarinettist’s Yiddish culture, the four musicians arrange and interpret the repertoire in their own way and insist on making the music migrate and meet new frontiers as it has done throughout its history.
Their main approach is to make collective arrangements of songs and tunes from the Jewish repertoire of central and Eastern Europe. They explore different sources: the archives of Ruth Rubin, Beregovski, melodies uncovered on albums such as those by The Joel Rubin Orchestra, Dave Tarras, Alicia Svigals…, or tunes shared during jam sessions and workshops.
Following eleven years working together, a first self-produced album Un vendredi soir après le dessert released in 2016, an EP Le Nouveau Sher, released in 2021 and an eponymous show in October 2022, the group is happy to present their new album, co-produced by the EIJM: Le petit matin du grand soir (Small Hours of the Big Day, Autumn 2023).
