Marc-Alain Ouaknin invites Hervé Roten on his radio show « Talmudiques » broadcasted on France Culture

Two radio programs on April 9 and 16, 2017

Jewish songs, French songs: a creative interaction

TALMUDIQUES – April 9 and 16, 2017, FRANCE CULTURE. Marc-Alain Ouaknin invites Hervé Roten to talk about the encounter of Jewish and French songs.

Broadcast of April 9, 2017
In all times, Jews blended with their environment by adopting the cultural references of the populations with whom they lived. In many cases, this integration comes with the adoption of the local language, as well as its customs, particularly concerning food and music.
In this first part, Hervé Roten, ethnomusicologist and director of the European Institute for Jewish Music, shows the creative interactions that existed between Jewish traditional songs (Yiddish, Oriental, Ladino…) and French songs.

Broadcast of April 16, 2017
In this second part, Hervé Roten speaks more specifically on the emergence of French songs through which several Jewish artists – who often belong to the 2nd or 3rd generation of immigrants – express their attachment to their double identity, French and Jewish.

These two shows are illustrated with many musical examples, performed in particular by Dave Cash, Richard Inger, Lili Boniche, Line Monty, Louisa Tounsia, Renée Lebas, Jacques Grober, Régine, Moustaki and Jean-Luc Goldmann.

Talmudiques: By Marc-Alain Ouaknin – Sundays from 9h10 am to 9h42 am.
An exploration of the many aspects of Jewish philosophy, their resonance in Western culture, and their contrast with the other cultures.
