Traditional and liturgical music of Algerian Jews

Concert et conférence

SUNDAY DECEMBER 9, 2012, 3pm and 5pm

Concert and lecture at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme – 71 rue du Temple, 75003 Paris

As part of the exhibition Juifs d’Algérie (September 28, 2012 – January 27, 2013), the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme and the Institut Européen des Musiques Juives are organizing an exceptional concert of traditional and liturgical Algerian Jewish music.

Singers Philippe Darmon, Yohan Bismuth, Ylane Zerbib and singer and pianist Paul Sultan, accompanied by a traditional instrumental ensemble, will perform the great tunes of the Algiers, Constantine and Oran Jewish communities…

The concert, which begins at 5pm, will be preceded by a lecture on the music of the Jews of Algeria by Hervé Roten, Director of the Institut Européen des Musiques Juives. Illustrated by numerous sound extracts, this lecture will offer a broad panorama of the liturgical, artful and popular music of the Jews of Algeria, from the Tlemcénien rite to the Constantinian malouf, from Franco-Arabic song to oriental music cabarets.

On this occasion, Herve Roten will present the latest CD in the Patrimoines Musicaux des Juifs de France collection, on Les psaumes des Juifs de Constantine. This CD will be sold as a preview in the MAHJ library, and will be signed by the artists who contributed to it.
