History of Hatikva, the Israeli national anthem

In introduction to the conference HATIKVA - Lyrical Odyssey, History and origins of the Israeli national anthem organised by the EIJM as part of the Festival of Jewish Cultures, on June 13th 2018 at 6 PM in the 3rd arrondiseement townhall of Paris, Théa Herz, psychologist, academic specialised in the presentation of information, will offer us a concise version of the amazing history of the Israeli national anthem.

If the author of the lyrics of the Hatikva is known (Naftali H. Imber, born in Galicia in 1856), the origin of its melody is much more enigmatic. Often credited to the Czech composer Smetana (1824-1884) who uses it in his symphonic poem La Moldau, Théa Herz shows us, with audio examples, that this tune circulated for over 500 years.

Officer of the Ordre of Arts and letters, PhD in musicology at Paris University Sorbonne, prize-winning graduate from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, Hervé Roten is the director of the European Institute for Jewish Music since its creation in 2006.
Ethnomusicologist, he quickly developed an interest in the safeguard and digitization of archives, subjects he taught for several years in Reims and Marne-La-Vallée universities.
Author of many articles, books and recordings related to Jewish music, producer of radio programs, Hervé Roten is recognized today as one of the best specialists of Jewish music in the world.
