Judeo-Spanish music : reappropriation and staging

A radio program by the European Institute of Jewish Music, hosted by Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI – May 8, 2018, JUDAÏQUES FM (94.8), 21H00. Radio program in French

On the occasion of the training session on Judeo-Spanish music organised by the association Aki Estamos from the 14th to the 19th of May 2018 at Medem Center Arbeter Ring (Paris), François Azar presents a wide panorama of Judeo-Spanish music, since their first written traces till today.

A speech that disturbs the idea of authenticity often spread by the holders of the tradition and that shows, on the contrary, that if there has been sometimes a permanancy of the texts – in particular medieval ballads (Romances) -, the traditional music have never been frozen. They always evolved following what was in vogue, and the geopolitic events.

In our modern society, traditional music often lost its original function. The craddle songs, celebration or wedding songs are performed today out of context by professional artists from all over the world and of all religion, for a wide audience. The traditional singing has become a show !

In these conditions, how can the performers play the Judeo-Spanish repertoire without losing the soul of it? How far can they go in their wish to renew the Judeo-Spanish music without distorting it totally?

To illustrate these ideas, Xenia d’Ambrosio and Jose Canalès from the ensemble Los Bilbilikos will give an example of their artistic approach.

As usual, this broadcast will be illustrated with a lot of Judeo-Spanish music, of yesterday and of today…
