Description
These recordings are a tribute to the rich musical tradition of the Sephardim from Tetuan, the town that was the spiritual center of Sephardic Judaism in northern Morocco. We named the CD after the first words of the first song-“Decile a Mi Amor”-tell my love, this seemed appropriate in expressing the depth of our feelings for this incredibly beautiful repertoire and for its singers. The songs are performed by Orit Perlman, a talented and devoted singer whom 1 have been working closely for the past ten years, accompanied by two very gifted and special musicians: Zeev Yaniv and Yarden Erez, the latter of whom prepared the arrangements. The songs are accompanied by traditional instruments (ud, darbuka, and frame-drums) as well as accordion, guitar and violin. Despite the time limitations of a single CD, this compilation includes the three traditional genres that comprise the repertoire: romances, coplas and cantigas, as well as songs composed in the early 20th century.
This project was made possible by the support and generous contribution of The Salonika and Greece Jewry Heritage Center and is a token of our gratitude to the Sephardic singers whom Susana Weich-Shahak recorded in Israel as well as in their communities abroad: Alicia Ben-Dayan (Ashkelon), Rina (Reina) Benabu-Benarosh and Estrella Ben TolilaHalfon (Holon), Ginett Benabu (Kiryat Gat), Rabbi Abraham Benhamu (Lima, Peru), Rachel Gerson-Israel and Clarita Benaim Levy (Madrid), Nelly Toledano (Buenos Aires), Moises Abitbol(Ashdod).
